Why Bowker Says "Buy Barcode" — and Why You Don't Have To
A book barcode is not a separate number. It is your ISBN drawn in the public EAN-13 ("Bookland") format, plus an optional 5-digit price code. The rules are an open GS1 standard, so the same ISBN and price always produce exactly the same bars.
That means the unique, paid part is the ISBN itself. Once you own it, a barcode generated here scans identically to one bought from an ISBN agency. Our tool checks the ISBN's check digit as you type, so a typo is caught before it reaches the printer.

Barcode Tips Before You Print
Black bars on a white box
Scanners read dark bars on a light background. Keep the barcode in a white box — never reverse it or print it over artwork.
Don't shrink it too far
GS1 allows 80% to 200% of normal size. At 100% the full barcode with price add-on is about 56 × 32 mm.
Lower right of the back cover
That is where retailers look. On KDP covers, keep it inside the 2 × 1.2 inch barcode area.
Change price → new barcode
